Is it safe to travel last minute?

Many people get bogged down with the idea that they need to book their holiday as far in advance as possible, but this certainly isn’t the case. If you happen to find yourself at a loose end for a few days, there is nothing stopping you from booking a last minute trip. You can even book and travel on the same day; you just need to make sure you’re super organised.

What if I need visas?

It depends on where you’re travelling to as to whether or not you’ll need to get a visa. If you’re flying to a country within the EU on a British passport, you shouldn’t need any other documentation. Flying to the USA requires a visa that you can apply for online. You should apply at least 72 hours before travel though. Do your research on destinations to figure out what documentation you need before you book anything and you should be fine. Just make sure you don’t book something and get there only to be held at customs because you don’t have the right papers to enter the country.

Where can I get spending money from?

If you are booking last minute, you may not have had chance to get any money changed into the local currency but don’t worry too much. There are places at the airport that will change your money and you can also use most credit and debit cards abroad as well. Make sure you call your bank to let them know where you’re going so that they don’t block your cards and you should be able to withdraw cash at ATMs wherever you are. Be aware that banks and credit card companies will charge you for spending and withdrawing money when you are abroad.

Where can I get my tickets from?

If you’ve booked your holiday at the last minute, you won’t have time to wait for tickets to come through the post. In these circumstances, you may have to print off e-tickets that will be emailed to you. Make sure you print all necessary paperwork and get a couple of copies of it, just in case. Speak to your booking agent to find out what you need to take with you to the airport and your hotel and be sure you have everything before you leave.

Having a ‘Holiday’ folder can never hurt and will keep important documents together for your trip. Make sure you keep them in your hand luggage and include your travel insurance documents and booking confirmations for any excursions .

How do I get to and from the airports?

Bear in mind that some last minute holidays don’t include transfers, so make sure you read through carefully what exactly is included in your holiday. There are regular coaches that run to the airports in the UK, but it may be worth trying to pre-book a car at the other end if there isn’t a transfer included when you arrive at your holiday destination. If you can plan ahead as much as possible, it’ll make the overall experience a bit easier and less stressful.

Can I still get travel insurance?

It is not worth the risk to travel without insurance and you can easily get it at the last minute. However, remember that you must take the policy out before you travel, it is too late once you are abroad! If you pick a policy specially tailored for last minute travel, check that it will cover all the things you may need.

You can purchase travel insurance online 24 hours a day 7 days a week and all documents are emailed to you so you can access them anytime. It takes just 5 minutes to purchase a policy so there is no excuse to travel without it.
