Young Briton in balcony fall

A young holidaymaker from Portsmouth has spent the past few weeks fighting for his life in hospital after falling from a hotel balcony while on holiday with friends in Ibiza.

The 20-year-old was airlifted to Son Dureta hospital in Palma, Majorca, where he was put into a medical coma.

It is alleged the man had written on his Facebook page, ‘where he could find cheap flights to Ibiza’. His father said his son made a spur-of-the-moment decision to join his friends on holiday.

The man’s father said his son has suffered bleeding on his brain but his condition had not worsened. He told the Portsmouth News: “Ryan has been heavily sedated and he is in a coma in intensive care. He had a massive bleed on one side of his brain and three smaller bleeds on the other side. He will not be able to move anywhere for at least two weeks. But there has been some good news because he has not got any worse.”

Luckily a huge effort has been made to raise the £15,000 sum needed to pay for an air ambulance to fly the youngster back to the UK, because he did not take out travel insurance. He is expected to return home in the next few days.

The money was raised through fundraisers and a generous donation by Bournemouth FC chairman Eddie Mitchell.
