So you have booked your well-earned holiday to sunny Spain for September. The children will be back at school and the resort will be peaceful and quiet.
Next on your list are summer clothes, swim wear and a new bottle of sun tan lotion. But what about cheap travel insurance?
Travel insurance isn’t usually at the forefront of your mind when you are impatiently counting down the days to the pool side but it should certainly be on your to-do list as soon as you have booked your trip.
Search multiple providers
Whilst you are in the booking agents you may be asked if you want to include cover with your holiday package. This may seem the easiest option but before you say yes, you may be able to find it cheaper online.
Simply using an online search engine can find you hundreds of travel insurance providers as well as using comparison websites such as moneysupermarket.com. Do be careful of comparison sites though, some policies are stripped bare so that they appear the cheapest.
If you have purchased travel insurance in the past you may have signed up to a newsletter. Have you read their recent emails? You may find discount codes to be used on your next purchase. 24/7 travel insurance often send out discount codes to existing customers so they can save money the next time they buy.
Searching online for ‘travel insurance discount codes’ can also be worth it as you may find a 10% voucher code for the very policy you were going to buy
Remove cover you don’t need!
Some policies allow you to remove cover you don’t want or need. For example, if you have booked a last minute trip and don’t want cancellation cover you may be able to opt to remove this from your policy which will reduce the premium. If your personal items are covered under your home insurance policy and you don’t want to pay for baggage cover, again you may be able to reduce your premium by removing cover.
Rather than opting out of certain cover limits some providers offer ready made cheaper policies which already exclude certain covers – such as the last minute policy from 24/7.
Read the small print
There is no point having insurance if in the event of a claim it wouldn’t pay out. Cheap holiday insurance is sometimes cheap because it doesn’t include standard items of cover you would expect to have automatically. Read the policy wording and make sure your cheap travel insurance is a good deal and gives you the cover you need.
