Australia – Working Holidays & Visa Scams

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) published a warning regarding Working Holiday Visa scams for Australia. There have been instances where victims have fallen prey to adverts offering to sell information to help extend a Working Holiday Visa.

Visas for a second-year Working Holiday are available for those who work in rural jobs, such as fruit picking, for three months during their first year of working holiday. Don’t get tricked into using information provided by these scammers to falsely claim to have worked on farms. According to the FCO several British and other foreign nationals have had their visas cancelled because of this and also been banned from returning to the country for three years.

British Nationals must obtain a visa to enter Australia, and a return or onward air ticket is required. It is also required that you have sufficient funds for your stay and access to emergency funds in case needed.

For important passport and visa information visit the Australian Government website which contains a wealth of very important information, so take the time to read through it all.

There is a reciprocal medical agreement between the UK and Australia which provides for British nationals to receive emergency medical treatment under Australian Medicare. If you are unsure about your eligibility for cover check with Medicare Australia for advice. Existing medical conditions, medicines and ambulance services may be excluded so it is very important to have backpacking travel insurance. Check that your policy covers all your chosen activities and especially check the levels of cover for example medical expenses limits and personal possessions cover.
